Prepare an ad creative with a clear brief

Define the message, image content, required formats and factual approval before designing an advert.

Designers discussing a creative mood board

An advertising brief should explain what the creative needs to communicate. File dimensions and colors matter, but they do not by themselves give the image and copy a shared task.

Imagine a fictional organizer promoting a weekend class in repairing simple wooden furniture. The creative should show that participants do the work themselves and that beginners are welcome. A photograph of a luxurious finished interior might look attractive while saying very little about the actual course.

Define one task rather than collecting adjectives

Begin with the situation, audience and intended action. “People with no prior experience should understand the course and view available dates” gives the designer a direction. “Modern, premium, emotional and for everyone” leaves the required message unclear.

State the one idea that should survive a brief glance. Here it might be repairing a small item of furniture with guidance. Add the details needed to interpret the offer correctly: location, duration, included costs and any prerequisites. Not every detail belongs inside the image, but it should be findable across the advert and destination page.

Describe the image and copy separately

The image brief might call for hands working on wood, a visible tool and an orderly workspace. If an actual course photograph is used, the necessary rights and permissions must be settled. A stock image should not be presented as a photograph of previous participants. An illustration should show tools appropriate to the task being described.

For the copy, specify the main message, requested action and factual limitations. Avoid unsupported statements such as “perfect results guaranteed”. A course can offer instruction without promising an individual's learning outcome. Identify details that must remain exact, such as a date or a precisely defined service.

Prepare outputs for the real placements

Confirm the required formats against the current specifications of the chosen platform. Do not plan only one large file that will later be cropped indiscriminately. A square crop and a narrow vertical placement may need different compositions to preserve the tool, hands or important text.

Review every version at approximately the size in which it will be seen. A small line that is readable on a large monitor may be unusable on a phone. Check contrast and make sure essential information remains available outside text embedded in the image.

The brief should also identify who approves factual content and which files will be delivered. These include finished formats and, if agreed, editable originals, fonts and relevant usage rights. Record the destination address so the completed creative can be checked against the page people will actually reach.

When giving feedback, use specific observations. “The course location is missing” can be acted on; “it doesn't feel right yet” offers little direction. Assess the design against the task defined at the beginning. New requests involving a different audience or offer should be recognized as a changed brief rather than slipping unnoticed into the final revision.
